KONE awarded CDP 2020 ‘A’ score for corporate sustainability leadership

Press Release Published 12/08/2020

KONE Corporation, press release, December 8, 2020

KONE Corporation, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, has been awarded a place on CDP's prestigious 2020 'A List' for its work in tackling climate change. The company has again been recognized for its actions to cut emissions, mitigate climate risks and develop a low-carbon economy. More than 5,800 companies were scored and KONE ranks among a small number of high-performers from that group.

Being a leader in sustainability has long been a strategic target for KONE. The company has a key role in making urbanization more sustainable and continues to take strong actions together with its customers, partners and suppliers, to develop sustainable business practices for the long term. Earlier this year, the company set science-based targets for significant reductions in its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the year 2030 and has also pledged to have carbon neutral operations in the same timeframe.

"We are proud to have been ranked as a leader by the CDP. Sustainability is more business-critical than ever. The multiple environmental and social challenges we face today are driving demand and action for carbon neutrality on company-, city- and country-level. More sustainable urbanization and approaches that benefit the environment are what we all should strive for," says Hanna Uusitalo, Environmental Director at KONE. "There's no doubt that making business more climate-friendly creates a substantial opportunity for us and our customers."

KONE has disclosed through CDP since 2009 and has received a leadership score of A or A- for eight consecutive years. CDP's annual environmental disclosure and scoring process is widely recognized as the gold standard of corporate environmental transparency. In 2020, over 9,600 companies with over 50% of global market capitalization disclosed environmental data through CDP. This is in addition to the hundreds of cities, states and regions who have disclosed, making CDP's platform one of the richest sources of information globally on how companies and governments are driving environmental change.

Each year, a detailed and independent methodology is used by CDP to assess these companies, allocating a score of A to D- based on the comprehensiveness of disclosure, awareness and management of environmental risks and demonstration of best practices associated with environmental leadership, such as setting ambitious and meaningful targets.

KONE is committed to conducting its business in a sustainable way and expects the same commitment from its suppliers: taking responsibility for the environment and sustainability more broadly is a central part of the KONE Code of Conduct, signed by all KONE employees and suppliers. As a member of the UN Global Compact, KONE supports the Sustainable Development agenda addressing the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainability.

Earlier in 2020, KONE was the only elevator and escalator company to make the Corporate Knights' 2020 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World ranking. The company ranked second among its 234 global category peers in the "Machinery Manufacturing" Corporate Knights Industry Group.
